THE CREATION 3—FLOOD AND BABEL

We have in the last 2 weeks, discussed the planning and execution of God’s beautiful creation as described in Genesis. And we have explored the human incomprehensible nature of that creation through God’s questioning of Job in the Book of Job chapters 38-41. So, why did God destroy it via a flood and reorganize it as a response to the tower of Babel? Despite the destruction, God takes pains to provide for the “reboot” of creation. He deliberately secures the remnant of His creation through Noah. So, why the flood? Possibly to remind us of His power and might but also to punish mankind. And, as a result of the flood, for a period of time, all the people of the earth are united in the Lord. After the flood waters receded, man was instructed numerous times to “multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number.” (Gen 8:17) In Genesis 9:1-18, God reestablishes the creation and its hierarchy. It does not take long for man’s sinful nature to reemerge, however. Noah gets drunk and his son takes advantage of his vulnerability. In addition, man refuses to disperse over the earth, and, in fact, attempts to build a tower to the heavens symbolic of their ability to be God-like.
