2 Timothy 4
November 30, 2025
In this sermon, Joe finishes his discussion on 2 Timothy. In chapter 3, Paul warns of the dangers of false teachers. In verse 6, Paul reminds us that false teachers often gain access to the church through weak women (think Eve in Genesis). Then Paul reminds Timothy of his own pedigree, and the examples he has witnessed esp in Paul, in addition to the fact that all scripture is “God-breathed.” This will equip Timothy for the task upon which he has been charged. By reminding Timothy of what he has endured in v. 10-11, Paul is affirming that he is not asking Timothy to do anything that he, himself, has also done. In v. 15, Paul reminds Timothy of what he has learned throughout his life, this is not new for him. And in v. 16, the oft quoted reminder that scripture is God-breathed. In fact, Paul specifically states that scripture should be used to teach, rebuke, correct, and train. In chapter 4, Paul emphatically states the purpose and end-state: “Timothy, go out and teach the word” (2 Tim 4:2), “do the work of an evangelist” (2 Tim 4:5). Do so at all times, convenient or inconvenient. Finally, again, Paul reminds Timothy that people will turn away from the truth and gather around false teachers who tell them what they want to hear. Regardless, he must endure with the truth of scripture. Excellent advice for all Christians.
