2 timothy 3

We have been talking about 2 Timothy the last couple of weeks because of its relevance to church leadership, especially today. Our mission is incomplete here, we must protect ourselves from the world (with Jesus’ help, of course) yet still be in the world (not removed) so that we may continue to fulfill our mission of bringing souls to the truth of the Gospel. Jesus has given us some guidance in how to handle these times—God is ever present, and base your words and deeds on the truth of scripture. To review, in chapter 2, Timothy was tasked by Paul to basically man-up and lead the church in Ephesis. In chapter 3 we are basically given the condition, “the corruptness of the world and its disdain for God and all things good.” Paul lists the bad of the world in one overwhelming sentence (2 Tim 3: 2-5). Much of this list can be summarized as lack of self-discipline and lack of humility, essentially the replacement of God with self.
