This letter was written to Timothy by Paul towards the end of Paul’s life. Timothy was charged with the leadership of the Christian church in Ephesus, a church riddled with debauchery. This is a personal letter of instruction that has great applicability today both in its predictions and in its method for dealing with evangelism and teaching in a world that does not want to hear our message. In chapter one, Paul is giving a motivational speech to Timothy. He explains that we, as believers, are given power by the Holy Spirit through which we are tasked to be disciplined in studying the Word of God and to show love by sharing the Word with others so that they too may experience eternal life. We are to be bold in our declaration especially in light of the surrounding competing forces. In 1:13-14, Paul supplies the method: retain the standard, do not change or water down the truth of the Gospel.
